Northumberland’s National Park is Northumberland’s greatest scenic treasure. Containing some of the most outstanding open moorland and magnificent wooded valleys to be found in the country, it is almost 400 square miles stretching from Hadrian’s Wall in the south up to The Cheviot Hills in the Borders.

Kielder Water, set deep in the vast Kielder Forest, is the largest manmade lake in Europe. It is one of Britain’s largest nature resorts and is home to the rare red squirrel, deer and some rare birds. Enjoy some of the activities at Kielder, including fishing, boating, watersports etc

The Scottish Borders, covering about 1800 square miles of rolling hills and moorlands, are a must to any visitor to the area. Charming and friendly now, the borders were not always peaceful and used to be home to the feuding ‘Reivers’. Chipchase Castle is one of the best examples of Jacobean architecture in the borders. The 14thC pele tower is very well preserved and gives an insight into living conditions during the turbulent times of the border raids. On the doorstep of The Black Bull Hotel it is well worth a visit.

The Racecourses of Hexham; a National Hunt Course perched high above the historic town of Hexham, and Kelso; a small but charming National Hunt Course, 1 mile north of Kelso, which enjoys quality racing in scenic surroundings are both within 1 hour’s drive of the hotel.

Fly-fishing on the North Tyne is becoming renowned for being first class, this coupled with some of the country’s most beautiful scenery, it’s no wonder that people return year after year.
